National Poetry Day 2018 - 18/10/2018

The IRC celebrated National Poetry Day 2018 by giving every Year 7 student a free poetry book – the IRC gives each year 7 student a free book at the beginning of their first term in order to mark the start of their reading journey at UCEA.

The goal was to inspire a number of students to take part in the IRC Poetry Competition. Students were tasked to write an acrostic poem about their favourite animal or bird. The winning poet will won a collection of poetry books and a giant bar of chocolate and the top ten entries will be entered in a national competition to win £100 of poetry books.

Jayne Hughes, UCEA Librarian, said: “I really enjoy giving each Year 7 student a free book at the beginning of Year 7 to welcome them to the IRC and UCEA. This year it was especially nice to be able to give everyone a poetry book which tied in with National Poetry day. The reaction from the students was fantastic and I am looking forward to reading the entries for the competition”.

Kieron from Year 7 added: “I was really pleased with my book and have read it already – I read it quickly because I like Poetry and the poems were fun!”.
